"My first impression of Piobesi d’Alba came from the top of a hill, where the landscape unfolds like a chessboard shaped by agriculture: vineyards, hazelnut groves, cultivated fields, buildings, and patches of woodland. Inspired by this human-designed geometry intertwined with the spontaneous life of evolving ecologies — capable of sustaining or eroding — I reimagined these relationships within an urban context.
Drawing on the historical use of terracotta bird nests, once employed for control or capture, I reinterpreted them as sculptures: small sanctuaries, spaces of refuge and dwelling.
The Passer italiae and other species, once widespread in the rural areas of northern Italy, are now in decline. My “relational nests,” along with beds of medicinal herbs and hedgerows, form a living art installation conceived for the village pharmacy and the town hall. The work explores themes of care and healing in both private and public relationships.
Birds return to inhabit the village square, becoming key actors in an urban ecosystem that promotes biodiversity, natural pest control, and — through the introduction of new vegetation — more sustainable viticultural practices." - Marguerite Kahrl
