Victoria Stoian’s artistic research focuses on the stories, as well as on the history, the traditions, and the geography of her homeland, Moldova, and its cultural diversity. Through an extensive series of works, the artist narrates the historical and natural events of her native land. For example, the Codri Earthquake project comprises 52 paintings, one for each second of the 2011 earthquake. The Nistru Confines series, which will include approximately 400 works upon completion, retraces the border of the Nistru River, marked by tensions with the secessionist Transnistria region. Her canvases lack preparatory drawings: colour appears as a stain, a glaze, or a stylization of figurative elements, inviting the viewer to recall details of events, objects, and people. Each form on the canvas is a self-contained world, complete only when seen together with others.
