Born in Iskenderun (Turkey), 1984.
Lives and works between London and Istanbul.

Fatma Bucak is a transnational artist who has worked in various geographical contexts, from Egypt to Mexico, all characterized by social unrest and rights abuse. Bucak explores the conceptual and ideological conditions of borders, investigating their contingency and tenuous interdependence. Recently, she has focused on censorship and oblivion, propaganda and passive consent, challenging the traditional method of writing history as well as the cultural and gender-based conventions. Her research includes photography, performance, sound, and video.

Fatma Bucak (Iskenderun, 1984) studied Philosophy at the University of Istanbul before completing her studies in Italy at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts, in Turin. Bucak earned a Master’s degree in Photography from the Royal College of Art in London. Among her solo exhibitions, we remember those at Peola Simondi Gallery (2022, 2015, 2011); Fondazione Kunsthaus Dresden (2022); MOCA, Toronto (2020 - duo); ICI, New York (2019 - duo); Fondazione Merz, Turin (2018); Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Palermo (2018); Pi Artworks London (2018, 2017); Bilsart, Istanbul (2018); Sardi Foundation, Turin (2017); Harpe 45, Lausanne (2017); David Winton Bell Gallery, Providence, Rhode Island (2016); Pori Art Museum, Finland (2016); Artpace, San Antonio, Texas (2015); Castello di Rivoli, Turin (2014); ARTER, Istanbul (2013).
